Despite being of a small build she is exceptionally strong even being able to bring down a large Mangalore with a single back hand. She appears human but with bright orange hair. You don't specifically see her in the ship but I think we're meant to presume that she is still in the sarcophagus. A large panel frames a scene from the science fiction movie The Fifth Element with the red-haired humanoid Leeloo flashing her ID card and the words Multi Pass. When evil returns, the Mondoshawans are in the process of returning Leeloo to the temple to allow her to defeat it when they are ambushed and crash. The sarcophagus is meant to be some sort of suspended animation for her. In the 23rd century, a New York City cabbie, Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), finds the fate of the world in his hands when Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) falls into his cab.
She is being 'stored' because the evil only returns every 5,000 years. I believe the story line is that in 1914 Egypt, the Mondoshawans (the aliens in the large suits) anticipating the events of the first world war take The Fifth Element from the temple into safekeeping off earth. (Its entirely a different question to ask why the weapon is in human form in the first place) She is an engineered being designed as a weapon to fight the ultimate evil. I believe that Leeloo / The Fifth Element is in human form throughout the entire movie.
